0086 I can't get enough of these machines!
Who doesn't love some Apple clones? With this bunch I have a lot of work ahead of me trying to get them all restored and working again, which is frankly pretty exciting!

Tinning corroded pins on the trash-picked CGA card
Переглядів 33 тис.14 днів тому
I recently found a corroded IBM CGA card in a scrap pile and brought it back to life using some chemicals to remove corrosion. I than movidied the card with some hacks to see if I could speed it up. Now it's time to try to make sure this card lasts in the long run. We can't leave exposed copper on the edge connector or it'll just corroded again. Time to fix that! I remember an ITT 2020 Apple II Clone, aka the silver Apple, from school. Strangely, it was unreliable for some people, but not me, and then the answer was found... Some people carried it out of the cupboard with the monitor on top, me being a bit of a weakling, disconnected the monitor and carried it separately - and you could see how badly it flexed with the heavy monitor on top, causing ICs to shift in the sockets. It was put on a trolley from then on

I feel like I learned a few things about technical information on tapes here, so thanks for that. Cool to see Earl Boen (The Terminator) in the gaming vest ad, and Phil Hartman (The Simpsons) in the Magnavox CDi ad. For me, shouting "what is this?!" every couple of minutes is way more cringe than pretty much anything we saw on the tape, maybe with the exception of angry condom kid. But this was an enjoyable video, wonder if you checked the other tapes.

Brazilian old man here, I remember these clones from my teen years. What always impressed me was the great lengths Brazilian companies went cloning Apples and Sinclairs, instead of just creating their own original products. Even at that time, designing and building 8-bit machines were fairly easy, and most likely easier than reverse-engineering a 3rd party's product.

At that point, an awful lot of systems ran with a serial terminal without any inbuilt display or keyboard. While I don't recognise the specific machine, I have worked with very similar machines - even down to the protoboard custom cards. I believe there was an S-80 bus that never caught on.

17:25 - Microdigital TK 2000: I'm Brazilian and TK 2000 like that is one of the first computers I met, mid 1980's, thanks to a neighbor and... it's mind-blowing to know it is an Apple II clone! 🤯 But, as I only met MSX users (Hotbit/Expert), I decided to stick with MSX ecosystem.

Brazilian apple II? I'm living here and never heard something about! Nice to know (i hope because in 70"s there was a law that allow the local producers (companies) to copy any electronic without any problem with copyright or patent, really)

Apparently nobody noticed, so here I go. This motherboard looks as a derivative from Apple ][ clone, and *NOT* a ][+. The first ][+'s, the Rev 0 to be more specific, were the ones with prototyping embedded on the motherboard. Granted, this one have two areas for prototyping, while the Rev 0 had only one- that ended up being use to install a auto-start (using a 555). You needed to manually hit RESET to initialize the machine at power up. Fun fact, CTRL were not used on the Rev0 times, leading to some pretty nasty mishaps when typing long listing! 😂 I think that the however had made this clone, started initially on a Rev0 and gradually backported the fixes and enhancements (the Rev0 didn't had Cyan neither Red!). This may explain why this motherboard apparently had some outdated circuitry. About the Keyboard, use CTRL+SHIFT to use the macros. Upgrading the keyboard controller was one of the things the clones had an edge over the original. Having support for Lowercase was another, and this one surely have it.

The board on the back of the TV is a HDMI converter. Not sure on the brand, but I have several as those are require to take Component or RCA into HDMI for the modern TVs of today. I am too lazy google all the standards, but those boards are nice. Mine are a bit flakey sometimes, and need a power cycle after a couple of months of use. My kids love the Gamecube and the Dreamcast, but you gotta get the RCA working first.

3:34 "there still IS snow" - no, there really isn't, snow occurs when the CGA tries to read from memory, but instead of the memory value it gets whatever's on the bus being written. During blanking, there's nothing read, so there really is no snow! As for the first blanking character not being thick font: the character is stored first in memory, the attribute second. So the CGA first reads the character, then reads the ROM, then reads the attribute (which with your mod sets the thick font). So you indeed have a delay of 1 character. I saw a UA-cam video a while ago that showed someone hacking a CGA card by adding a small register chip allowing to select one of the 16 colours for any of the 4 in graphics mode, which was pretty cool, but I can't for the life of me find it again...

Very interesting video! Two things to keep an eye for, and I believe the other commenters haven't said that yet: 1. Brazilian mains is 110V/127V or 220V at 60Hz, as other commenters said, but in the 80s 110V/127V was more common in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo (the largest Brazilian cities), and some computer and appliance makers didn't even bother to include a voltage selection switch, defaulting to 110V/127V. Since I lived in Brasília, which is 220V, transformers were a common sight. 2. Brazilian analog TV standard is PAL-M (60 Hz, unlike European PAL, which is 50Hz), but some Apple II clones (not all!) had NTSC, because the video circuit was cloned just as it was. We had to use transcoders in order to get color video out of some of these machines. The one I had access to, an "Apple Senior" made by Milmar (actually a slightly enhanced Apple II+ clone), had NTSC video, but I didn't mind since it was connected to a monochrome monitor.

Yeah, Pal-M and NTSC are BW compatible, but not color compatible.

Can't pass on the opportunity to talk about a funny thing involving apple and Brazil, the once biggest eletronic company here Gradiente, actually has the right to use the "iPhone" name here and there's an ongoing legal battle about who has the right to use it.

Don't worry about the reverb of the living room. With such a close miking, it doesn't cause problems, it just makes it sound authentic :)

Interesting the "Microcraft" logo on that one board looks like they ripped off the early 80s Microsoft typeface. I wonder if they used that to their advantage since a large portion of their customer base probably didn't speak English, but they may have recognized the logo and assumed it was a somewhat official product from a legit US company.

Impressora (portuguese) = Printer (english). Most probably a Centronics parallel port, but, less probably, can be a serial RS-232. Remoto (portuguese) = Remote (english). If it's a 2.5mm female mono jack plug, is no doubt the cassette deck remote control signal to start or stop the tape play/record motor.

Brazil does actually have 60 Hz electricity, which is why they went with television system M, though uniquely they went with PAL color encoding, hence PAL-M.
